To my lovely grandchildren

To our lovely grandchildren,

We have had the pleasure to meet some of you and trust that if there are others who were born after our passing, you will have heard wonderful stories and tales of our adventures. We especially want to thank you for the gifts you have given us, your love, your hugs, and the wonderful surprise of $1200 the summer before the election of 2008. What a wonderful gift. Though it was not needed for anything particular, it did offer the stimulus we needed to take that extra vacation to Mexico. We already had enough miles from our credit card purchases so the flight down there was free and we were able to put the entire amount toward a wonderful ten days of unexpected relaxation. We know you are now diligently paying this money back to the government, as are many of your generation, and we know this has not been easy with all the leftover debt from the war and all. But we just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate your generosity.

So again, thank you for your generosity and your willingness to give, without even being asked. We had a wonderful time and hope that someday you too may be able to take a vacation.

Bush Issues Signing Statement On Defense Act, Waiving Ban On Permanent Bases In Iraq

President Bush yesterday signed the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act after initially rejecting Congress’s first version because it would have allegedly opened the Iraqi government to “expensive lawsuits.”

Even though he forced Congress to change its original bill, Bush’s signature yesterday came with a little-noticed signing statement, claiming that provisions in the law “could inhibit the President’s ability to carry out his constitutional obligations.” CQ reports on the provisions Bush plans to disregard:

One such provision sets up a commission to probe contracting fraud in Iraq and Afghanistan. Another expands protections for whistleblowers who work for government contractors. A third requires that U.S. intelligence agencies promptly respond to congressional requests for documents. And a fourth bars funding for permanent bases in Iraq and for any action that exercises U.S. control over Iraq’s oil money.

In his “Memorandum of Justification” for the waiver, Bush cited his Nov. 26 “Declaration of Principles for a Long-Term Relationship of Cooperation and Friendship” between Iraq and the United States. This agreement has been aggressively opposed by both Republicans and Democrats in Congress as not only unprecedented, but also potentially unconstitutional because it was enacted without the agreement of the legislation branch.

Today on CNN, Rep. Bill Delahunt (D-MA) voiced concern that this declaration may indefinitely commit U.S. troops to fighting Iraq’s civil wars:

Involved in those declaration of principles, there is an implicit potential for the United States military forces, years from now, being involved in a full-blown civil war in Iraq. And I don’t believe that’s where the American people want us and I don’t think that’s in the best interest of our national security.

Earlier this month, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) introduced legislation requiring the Bush administration “to consult with Congress before moving forward with any agreement that could lead to long term security arrangements and other major economic and political commitments.”
Throughout his presidency, Bush has issued more than 151 signing statements challenging 1149 provisions of laws.

Matthew 17:1-9

The Transfiguration

All that talk about crosses
It’s kinda creepy
It just feels good to get out
(led them up)
Go for a little hike
Where I don’t know
But good
And we all strive to stay on top
(three shelters)
Up
Out of the way
Longing for the easy way
Out of the dust
(this is my son)
Dirt
(whom I love)
Streets
(listen to him)
If only we could stay here
Have the people come to us
Visit the place it all came together
(he led them)
A holy place
(down the mountain)
A sign of the kingdom

Off the horse and into the streets

Sunday February 3rd, Exodus 24: 12 The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and commands I have written for their instruction." In the Gospel for today, Jesus goes up on the mountain. God’s love for all humanity then goes down into the dusty streets of humanity. In Exodus, Moses goes up to the mountain to spend some time with God before coming down with the law, an earlier version of God’s love for all humanity. Today, modern raggin’ Pelagians want to put the Ten Commandments on the walls of the court houses, making sure everyone “knows” what they should “do” to live right. They forget the most important part, the Promise. I am the Lord Your God and you are my people. Moses brings down the law; he comes down from the clouds with this sign of the promise of God. Peter, James and John come down out of the mountains with Jesus, the sign of the promise of God fulfilled. Now it is our turn to come down out of the mountains, or at least off our high horse, and bring the good news to the streets.

Life is liturgical

Monday February 4th, Exodus 24: 15 When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, 16 and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud. 17 To the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. 18 Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. The symbols roll one upon another in this description. The connections to the Glory and Majesty of God, the six days of the new creation followed by communing with the Lord, the consuming fire of purification and the forty days and nights of Jesus in the wilderness or the forty years of the wanderings in the desert, they are all in these few simple verses. Something new is starting and God will be part of it. Humanity will be blessed with the presence and the promise of God. How many times in our lives do those liturgical connections, in whatever form they may take, punctuate a new beginning or a Holy moment in our lives? The birth of a child, a long darkness ended, a leaf falling from a tree, an amazing sunrise, or some event or observation that has meaning only for you. God is there. The history of God’s relationship to all humanity is there. Your life is punctuated with a “yes” and you go on knowing life will never be the same. For those who have their eyes and hearts open, life is liturgical, and God’s nearness is known. May you have such a moment.

Reflect

Tuesday February 5th, 2 Peter 1: 19 Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts. Sometimes the message has been proclaimed by prophets, sometimes by saints, sometimes by aunts and uncles, parents and children, friends or strangers, but through it, you know is it God speaking to your heart. In the darkness, the illumination is sufficient and you can find your way. What you find your way to is the light of Christ, the Morning Start that brings hope after a long night of darkness. Listen to the words of the children of God in times of darkness. Be the words of God for others in their darkness. Even the dimness of only the reflected light of the Morning Star can bring hope to a heart in need.

Vetting

Wednesday February 6th, 2 Peter 1: 20 Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, 21 or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God. One can profit from listening to the prophets, but there is a danger in listening to just one. Many can reflect the light of Christ, whether they be the prophets of old or the old lady down the street. The light of Christ can be seen in the children playing or asking questions or the learned scholar offering insight that opens a whole new way of thinking. Sometimes however, someone shining their own light in the midst of darkness can seem so holy we never notice the small ‘h.” You can pretty much count on the prophets of old having been vetted through the years. Modern day messengers are a little trickier. It is always best to test what you hear from those who seem to have an inside track with God, with some of those older vetted prophets before you sell the farm.

Shine

Thursday February 7th, Matthew 17: 1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. 4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." Oh, the moment!!!! To stay up on the mountain top and enjoy the bliss. To bask in the light from on high and stay out of the dirty dusty streets and away from crosses, that is the life. You and I too would most likely want to stay and build the booths. You and I too would want to stay in the sanctuary and sing the songs and preach the praises. Only, sometimes, light in order to be light, must shine in the darkness of the streets. After six days the new creation is done, on the seventh we come into the presence of Christ, and then it is time, time to leave the mountain tops behind and shine the reflective light of Christ.

Listen

Friday February 8th, Matthew 17: 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" Amid the commotion of the moment comes the voice of God. It not only claims Jesus as the loved one and the Son, but more importantly the one who is to be listened to. Sometimes amid the clamor of our own voices and programs we fail to hear the voice of God. This is Jesus, my son whom I love,…………….. LISTEN TO HIM!!!!!!! Listen as he leads you to the dusty streets. Listen as he leads you to the poor and needy. Listen as he leads you to a life of prayer. Turn out your own lights, turn down your own volume, turn down the static and noise of day to day life, and listen. And what does the Lord require, that you seek justice, show mercy and walk humbly before your God.

Fear not!! and go!!!

Saturday February 9th, Matthew 17: 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid." 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus. Fear not, for the spirit of God is upon you and you will bear a son, and hope was brought to the world. Fear not, for unto you is born this day in the city of David, a son, and hope was brought into the world. Get up and don’t be afraid, and they saw Jesus ready to lead them into the towns and villages below, and hope was brought into the world. Fear not, get out of your pews and into the streets, and hope is brought into the world. Fear not, and go!!

Dominance of the religious right over our politics is finally finished

According to a prominent liberal Evangelical, there is a major political and generational shift going on among Evangelical Christians in America.

Jim Wallis, the editor of Sojourners Magazine, told Jon Stewart on Tuesday's Daily Show, "Two things have happened since we last talked. I've got some good news and some great news. The good news is, the dominance of the religious right over our politics is finally finished."

As the audience cheered and applauded, Wallis continued, "Even the better news is now a new generation has come of age and they're applying their faith ... to the biggest issues that face us: the moral scandal of poverty, the degradation of the environment -- which we call God's creation -- the threat of climate change, Darfur, human rights, the exclusive use of war to fight evil."

Stewart questioned whether a religious left might not wind up being just as rigid as the religious right, but on the other side. Wallis replied that he wasn't expecting that to happen, because people in this country "don't want to go left or right, they want to go deeper, they want to go to a moral center."

"Politics in America is broken," Wallis said, explaining why he anticipates a new social movement, rather than a new political movement. "Social movements often rise up to change politics when it fails. And the best social movements often have spiritual foundations."
"Why does it always have to be tied in to faith?" Stewart asked, pointing out that at the same time as the 19th century abolitionists were appealing to religion, so were the supporters of slavery. "Isn't there a way to have a right and wrong?"

"Religion has no monopoly on morality," Wallis agreed, acknowledging that all the great social movements have had a significant component of people of faith, but never exclusively. "And there's a whole new denomination now," he added, "called the spiritual but not religious, that's growing all over the country."

"The two great hungers in the world today are the hunger for spirituality and the hunger for social justice, and the connection between the two is the one the new generation is just waiting for," Wallis concluded.

He cautioned, however, that "when people of faith get to the public square, they shouldn't say, 'My religious view is this.' They should speak in moral language that is inclusive of everybody. ... I care about not someone's religion, but what their moral compass is."

Matthew 4:12-23

Jesus Begins to Preach

all that was foretold in the scriptures
the Messiah
the place
the people
came together
and the words rang out
and change rippled through the land
(repent)
As the people began to hear the word
And began to realize the joy
(the Kingdom)
That was meant from the beginning of time
(is near)
For all people
Some who heard dropped what they we doing
(fishers)
And followed
Change rippling through the land
(of men and women)
Leaving behind centuries of sameness
And security
And allowed to unfold before them
Change
Rippling through the land
And began to realize the joy before them
The kingdom
Is near
That was for all people
To follow
From the beginning of time

From Mess to Message

Sunday January 27th, Isaiah 9: 1 But suddenly there will be no more gloom for the land that suffered. In the past God made the lands of Zebulun and Naphtali hang their heads in shame, but in the future those lands will be made great. The areas the tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali settled and lived was along the northern and western shores of the Sea of Galilee. When the Assyrians conquered the area, they were among the first to fall. This was the Promised Land, it was believed that God gave it to them, and now these two tribes became the symbol of defeat, and with it, God’s displeasure. They were the scapegoats for what would eventually befall the rest of the tribes. God’s message in the midst of shame and defeat is lift up your heads. Similar to the message to Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, and you and I, Fear not. In the midst of the worst of times, fear not. In the midst of life falling apart, fear not. In the midst of fear, fear not, for the Lord is with you, and any kind of mess you life turns into, God is with you. The mess becomes message, and down the road a ways, you can look back and see that the Kingdom of God was indeed, near. Fear Not.

Me, Me, Me, Me, Me first

Tuesday January 29th, 1 Corinthians: 10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. 11 My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas"; still another, "I follow Christ." 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? The church in Corinth was in the midst of deadly game of one-upsmenship. Deadly because it divided the kingdom on earth. Deadly because that deadly game is always about the self and not about God. When people and churches turn their attention upon themselves instead of God, there is trouble ahead. When people and churches turn their attention to the kingdom of God, differences in doctrine, faith statements, natures and names for God are more about flavor than about division. Someday the faith communities of the world will learn that. Until then, there is conflict.

Will you win or be one

Wednesday January 30th, 1 Corinthians 1: 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. The ones who are perishing are the ones who are focused on the self. Their focus is on how they can win, get ahead, or sometimes even how their theology is right and others is wrong. The cross is a nice thing to wear, but for them, salvation comes from good old fashion hard work. Grace may even be a word they use, but salvation is still through work, effort, right belief etc. They will be saved in the end, in spite of being right, by the cross of Christ.

Rejoice, Repent and turn out your light

Thursday January 31st, Matthew 4: 12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: 15 "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— 16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned." 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." This is the message we are to bring to the world, the Kingdom is near. God is never far off, God is never outside our reach and more importantly, we are never outside God’s reach. The presence of Christ is good news for the world. In times past, Zebulun and Naphtali were given the good news in Isaiah that their time of shame and exclusion is over. The darkness they considered a way of life had come to an end and in them, and even through them, light would shine. Today that same good news comes to those whose lives are down trodden, stand up, rejoice, the kingdom is near and the darkness if over. It is sometimes hard to see that when you are busy shining your own light, but don’t worry, the batteries will soon give out and then you too will be able to see the glory of God.

Tell me about the God you don't believe in

Friday February 1st, Matthew 4: 18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." 20 At once they left their nets and followed him. Jesus calls some away, those who are to follow into a different calling. There were many who were not called out from what they were doing. There are many who are called to continue our fishing, or business or public service and to be a follower of Christ in that place. Called to change lives in that place. Called to announce the nearness of the Kingdom in that place. How, and where is Christ calling you? Who are the eager ears and yearning hearts that are soooo tired of hearing of the wrath of God and the self-righteousness of God’s followers more than the grace of God? Today, most in our world have heard of Christ, that is not so much the issue as countering fundamentalists packaging the message has come in. William Sloane Coffin, when confronted in conversations about a non-belief in God, would ask the person to describe that God they don’t believe in. Most often he was able to tell them that he didn’t believe in that god either, then, sometimes, they were ready for a word of grace.

Make sure you have fun

Saturday February 2nd, Matthew 4: 23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. The Kingdom of God is near. It is near you at work, it is near you at play, it is in what you do, it is in what you say, it is part of your reaching out in love, because when you reach out, God comes down from above. Christ comes to us all wherever we are whether you are here or whether you are far, and helps us to spread the good news of grace, to every land, culture and race. So gather your friends from far and wide, don’t try to run and don’t try to hide, tell them God loves them and they are saved by grace and that this message is for the whole human race. And child of God, make sure you have fun as you go out and tell everyone.

John 1:29-42

Jesus the Lamb of God

Behold the Lamb of God
Behold
The one who was
And is
And is to come
Behold the Lamb of God
Behold
The one on whom the spirit descended
And sat there
Like a dove
Behold
And follow
To places unknown
To worlds unseen
To God revealed
Follow the one who comes in the name of the Lord
Follow
And see changed before you
More than just a name
And upon this foundation
I will build my church
Behold
And follow
And be changed

The Great Director

Sunday January 20th, Isaiah 49: 5 the Lord made me in the body of my mother to be his servant, to lead the people of Jacob back to him so that Israel might be gathered to him. I love the following on God’s calling. God acts in history and in your and my brief histories not as the puppeteer who sets the scene and works the strings but rather as the great director who no matter what role fate casts us in conveys to us somehow from the wings, if we have our eyes, ears, hearts open and sometimes even if we don’t, how we can play those roles in a way to enrich and ennoble and hallow the whole vast drama of things including our own small but crucial parts in it.
Fredrick Buechner, “Telling Secrets” pg.32

Path to life

Monday January 21st, Isaiah 49: "You are an important servant to me to bring back the tribes of Jacob, to bring back the people of Israel who are left alive. But, more importantly, I will make you a light for all nations to show people all over the world the way to be saved." This text from Isaiah calls each and every one of us. God has a plan for our life, it is not specific like what shirt will I wear today, but it is a calling. How are you called to be a child of God today? Who are you called to talk to? What function will you serve in the Kingdom on earth? All questions about your life and how you will live it as a child of God. But know this, when you find the path that God has set before you, all of life makes sense.

Start to hum

Tuesday January 22nd 1st Corinthians 1: 7-9 Just think—you don't need a thing, you've got it all! All God's gifts are right in front of you as you wait expectantly for our Master Jesus to arrive on the scene for the Finale. Paul is talking to the church at Corinth. They were hung up on spiritual gifts and who had what and which ones were more important etc. Paul’s message is that each gift is important and that every gathering of the body of Christ has all the spiritual gifts needed for that body of Christ. Our church has all the gifts needed for this time and place; your church has all the gifts needed for this time and place. It is often a matter of coaxing these gifts out of those sitting in the pews. After years of TV, the problem is not a lack of spiritual gifts, it is the couch potato Christian mentality that tends to keep the people in the pews looking for, and being, entertained. One of the destructive gifts from the current fundamentalists’ movement is the individuality that exists in any given congregation, exemplified by the question, “are you(singular) saved? We are never really saved from, we are always saved for. Paul was also dealing with this individuality in Corinth. When the body sees itself as the “body,” that is when things start to hum.

Never alone

Wednesday January 23rd, 1st Corinthians 1:And not only that, but God himself is right alongside to keep you steady and on track until thin gs are all wrapped up by Jesus. God, who got you started in this spiritual adventure, shares with us the life of his Son and our Master Jesus. He will never give up on you. Never forget that. We are never alone in this life; God is with us, and most often in the form of our fellow brothers and sisters in the body of Christ. There will be a time when all this will come to an end, a time when God will restore the intention of creation, but until then, there is work to do, and lots of it. The work of the kingdom now is to work toward justice, as God sees justice, for all of creation. It is not just making things better for you and I, but more importantly, for them. The them are the ones we don’t see, don’t hear, and will most likely never meet. They may never utter the word Jesus or Christ or even be thankful for the grace shown. What is important is not their reaction or conversion, but simply that they are treated and seen as our brothers and sisters in Christ. After all this is not about us, but about the kingdom. Our job is to bring Justice, God’s justice to all of creation, and that includes all creatures. Few of us would claim that our parents love us but not our brother or sister, no matter where our brother or sister has moved off to or how much contact they may or may not keep. We do however have little trouble claiming that rather sick idea in the name of God, our father in heaven. Time for the children of God throughout the world to begin to get to know and love their brothers and sisters in this creation, and remember, God is with you in the process.

Big "G"

Thursday January 24th, John 1: 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." The Lamb of God, not the lion of Judah, not the mighty eagle or warrior king, not the mighty Caesar or Pax Romania, but the lamb, the one who gives, and dies, is the one who takes away the sin of the world. Not the sin of me only, or those who are good Lutherans, or those who believe like me, but the sin of the world. For the sin of the world is always to put the self first and to win and come out ahead at all cost. The sin of the world is to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and all knowledge in-between and to be like a god unto ourselves. Our human sin, our original sin, is to fake our way into thinking that we don’t need god or that we can create god in our image or at least in our thought pattern and be satisfied with god with a little “g.” The Lamb calls us to a different reality, it is to follow the one who gives and gives. It is to recognize ourselves as the Children of God, brothers and sisters all, and to have the God, big “G” in our lives.

Christ, not Caesar of lord

Friday January 25th, John 1: 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God." The claim that Jesus is the Son of God is the claim that Caesar is “not” the son of god. Might and force do not rule the day. Armies, death and control do not rule the day, for a new day, a new dawn has arrived. The Spirit of God came down into the world and has stayed with the children of God. We are, and never will be alone. Through this one, this Jesus the Christ, the world will know the love of God as never before and calls the followers of God to share the news of that all giving, Lamb of God, love.

Ride of a lifetime

Saturday January 26th, John 1: 35 the next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" When you encounter the living Christ it is time to follow. Follow the one who is the light of the world. Follow the one who will bring life and forgiveness. Follow the one who forgives sins. Follow the one who brings hope to the hopeless. The accommodations may not be glamorous, but it is the ride of a lifetime, literally.

I thought he was working on a Peace plan

And now in tme to influence the elections......

Israel Won't Accept Nuke Weapons in Iran

By LAURIE COPANS

JERUSALEM (AP) - Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told a powerful parliamentary panel on Monday that Israel rejects "no options" to block Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, a meeting participant said.
The statement was the Israeli leader's clearest indication yet that he is willing to use military force against Iran.
"Israel clearly will not reconcile itself to a nuclear Iran," the meeting participant quoted Olmert as telling the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. "All options that prevent Iran from gaining nuclear capabilities are legitimate within the context of how to grapple with this matter."
The meeting participant spoke on condition of anonymity because the session was closed.
Olmert addressed the panel days after discussing Iran's nuclear ambitions in talks with President Bush in Jerusalem.

US and Israel on same page regarding Iran

From the Jerusalem Post

Israel and the US are "on the same page" regarding the gravity of the Iranian nuclear threat and their commitment to thwart it, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's spokesman Mark Regev said Saturday night.

Regev's comments come amid Israeli concern that last month's US National Intelligence Estimate, which stated that Iran stopped its nuclear weapons program in 2003, had placed Jerusalem and Washington at odds over the threat.
US officials have said repeatedly that one of the main purposes of President George W. Bush's current visit to the region was to assure the US's Sunni allies of Washington's commitment to their security in light of the NIE estimate, which seemed to take a military option against Iran off the table.

Iran showdown has echoes of faked Tonkin attack

A dramatic showdown at sea. Crossed communication signals. Apparently-hostile craft nearby. Sketchy intelligence leading to ratcheted up rhetoric.

The similarities between this week's confrontation between US warships and Iranian speedboats and events off the coast of North Vietnam 44 years ago were too hard for many experts to miss, leading to the question: Is the Strait of Hormuz 2008's Gulf of Tonkin?
On Aug. 2nd and 4th, 1964, the USS Maddox and the USS Turner Joy, patrolling off the North Vietnamese coast, intercepted signals indicating they were under attack. Within days, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which paved the way to the escalation of the Vietnam War. However, as some intelligence agents suspected at the time, the Aug. 2nd attack took place after the USS Maddox fired first, according to a National Security Agency report released in 1995.

This week another NSA report surfaced, confirming suspicions that the Aug. 4th attack never happened.

The researcher who uncovered the most recent NSA assessment tells RAW STORY that the Strait of Hormuz confrontation, and the immediate saber-rattling from the Bush administration and its allies, demonstrates the extent to which officials must be wary about politicizing shaky intelligence in times of war.

"The parallels (between Tonkin and Hormuz) speak for themselves, but what they say is that even the most basic factual assumptions can be made erroneously [or] can prove to be false," Steven Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists, told Raw Story. "Therefore extreme caution is always appropriate before drawing conclusions ... that might leave to violent conflict. That's almost so obvious that I feel embarrassed saying it, but there is a history of mistaken interpretations of these kinds of encounters that ought to teach us humility."

Humility and caution, of course, don't seem to be the most popular buzz words in the Bush White House.

"It is a dangerous situation. ... I think it was a provocative act," Bush warned two days after a handful of small Iranian speedboats spooked a fleet of US Navy warships.

The Pentagon's initial account of the Jan. 6 confrontation said the Iranian boats "charged" the US ships, dropped boxes in the water that were thought to be mines and threatened to set up "explosions." An unnamed US Defense Department official told the Associated Press the day after the incident that it was "the most serious provocation of its sort" in the Gulf, although Iranian officials tried to downplay the incident as a simple misunderstanding.

It was not until Thursday, after the Pentagon and Iran had each released videos of the encounter, that the US acknowledged the verbal threats they had associated with the Iranian speedboats from day one could have been broadcast from virtually anywhere.

"I am coming to you .... You will explode after a few minutes," a voice says on the audio recording but Farsi speakers and Iranians have said the voice did not sound Iranian.
Aftergood said he was surprised at the uncertainty regarding the origin of that message, which was broadcast on a public communication channel and superimposed onto the end of the Pentagon video.

"One might've thought that they would be able to pinpoint it exactly, but it turns out that's not so," said Aftergood, who runs FAS's Project on Government Secrecy. "It's also surprising that President Bush was permitted to get so far out in front on this issue, even though there were significant uncertainties on what transpired."

Others have questioned the supposed mines that were claimed to be dropped form the Iranian boats.

"The bit about the 'white boxes' being dropped into the water seems almost equally dubious," writes Glenn Greenwald. "Neither the video of the incident released by the U.S. military, nor the video version released by the Iranian government, includes any such event, nor are there any references to it at all on the audio."

Aftergood said the information should have been more fully vetted before the White House began warning Iran of "serious consequences" of future showdowns.

"What you hear talking is the child on the schoolyard, not the sober national leader," he said. "And i don't think that serves anyone's interest."

Aftergood noted that America is less poorly equipped to avoid international incidents than it was during the Cold War.

"The credibility at least of the administration has taken a hit by the way this episode played out," Aftergood said, but the near-confrontation could provide an opportunity for Bush to learn from his mistakes.

The US has largely given Iran the diplomatic silent treatment during the Bush years, which Aftergood said increases the likelihood that the next Strait of Hormuz-type incident won't de-escalate so quickly.

"If we could have a hotline with the Kremlin while they had thousands of nuclear weapons aimed at our country, one would think we could do the same for Iran," he said. "With some skillful statesmanship ... this could serve as the impetus for that, but it would be one way to turn a negative into a net positive."

Jan 08 newsletter

For unto you is born this day in the City of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord. He is known as Wonderful Counselor, Almighty God, and Prince of Peace. But mostly I want to look at Christ as Emmanuel, God with us. What does it mean that God is with us and who is the “us” God is with?

When I was young I had this vision of God up in heaven. Perhaps I was a child of the times and the pictures in the Sunday School materials, but my vision was always one of a stately old man with a flowing white beard, looking down on humanity. It was not an unpleasant image for me, indeed it brought me comfort. But for the most part, God was up there and I was down here and my job was to be good enough to get up there eventually, but not too soon. This is not Emmanuel, God with us.

God with us carries a different vision. First it carries the image of God being with “me.” What that means is that I am never alone. A comforting thought in the dark and difficult times in my life, not so comforting at other times. It reminds me of a friend of mine who says that “pray unceasingly” is not a request of us to pray all the time, but rather a realization that everything we think, do, and say is a prayer. We have to ask ourselves if it is a prayer we want to really want to be praying right now. Emmanuel, means that God is always a part of everything I do, everything! That is both comforting and cleansing, and most of us don’t want to be all that cleansed most the time. When we have a time of confession during worship, or when someone comes into my office for private confession, our words and thoughts in these moments are not all God is aware of. God was right there with us when we made up all the rationalizations in our heads that was we were doing was really going to be ok. That covers the more obvious “that which we have done” part, but there is still the much larger “that which we have left undone” part to deal with. What is often left undone is our failure to take seriously the effect our lack of action has on our brothers and sisters in Christ. The trend in the world is always toward the powerful gaining more and more power and wealth, and rational is that a rising tide raises all boats. We also live in a world where half the population lives on less than $2 a day and a country where we have the largest prison population per capata in the world. Truly, there is more being left undone than there is being done wrong and the rising tide raises only those boats who are not anchored in systemic poverty.

Secondly, “God with us” carries the image of God being with “them.” God’s concept of “us” is much broader than ours. God’s concept of “us” includes you and me and those we know well. It also includes those we don’t know so well. It also includes those we don’t know at all. It also includes those we don’t want to know and it also includes those we never ever in our whole life ever want to meet. It also includes our enemies. God with us means that we can never look at another individual and not see the presence of God in their life. They may or may not acknowledge that, it matters about as much as one of your children saying they are no longer your child, you just smile and wait knowing they will come back sooner or later asking for money. Emmanuel, God with us means that how we treat others, “IS” how we treat God. We are called then to treat others, not as they would treat us, but as we would, if we think about it, treat God. They are, through Emmanuel, our brothers and sisters in God’s eyes.

In 2008, we will look into what it truly means to call Jesus, Emmanuel and how that plays out in our lives as the children of God. Come and join us. Amen

Matthew 3:13-17

The Baptism of Jesus

Repent
For the Kingdom of God is at hand
Repent
And be baptized
Repent
And the kingdom of God appeared
The kingdom that would break in
The kingdom
(at that moment the heavens opened)
That would shake up all the kingdoms of this world
All the power and might
(the Spirit of God)
Of all the armies
(like a dove)
That have trampled in victory after victory
Over nation, tribe and people
(and a voice)
And established
And collected
And subdued
All
(this is my son)
Until now
(in whom I am well pleased)
Repent
And be baptized
The kingdom of God is at hand

Called

Sunday January 13th, Isaiah 42: 1 Here is my servant! I have made him strong. He is my chosen one; I am pleased with him. I have given him my Spirit, and he will bring justice to the nations. 2 He won't shout or yell or call out in the streets. 3 He won't break off a bent reed or put out a dying flame, but he will make sure that justice is done. Through our baptism, we join together with the children of God as heirs of this calling. The prophets of old looked forward to the coming of the chosen one who would bring about true justice, God’s justice in the land. In these later days, the spirit of God is upon you, upon me, upon our neighbors and brothers and sisters in this world. And our calling is this, wherever you are, whatever you do, whoever you are, in that place and time, live your life in such a way so as to bring a bit more justice into the world. No mighty spiritual armies here, no warriors for God, only the people of God reaching out to those in need. Instead of bruising or extinguishing, there is nurturing for the least, lost and lonely. It is the Kingdom. This is now. It is here.

Chosen

Monday January 14th, Isaiah 42: (The Lord said) I made the earth and everything that grows on it. I am the source of life for all who live on this earth, so listen to what I say. 6 I chose you to bring justice, and I am here at your side. I selected and sent you to bring light and my promise of hope to the nations. In our calling to be the voice and work of God’s justice in the world, we are not alone. It is God who is at our side. It is God who opens our eyes to the needs of others. It is God who tugs at our heart strings and urges us to act. You have been chosen by God and this day God has reaffirmed that choice. Go and be the child of God you were called to be. Go and do the work of God, forgiven and renewed, forgiving and renewing. You have been chosen.

Tribalism

Tuesday January 15th, Acts 10: 34 Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism 35 but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right. We deplore the brutality of tribalism in the Sudan and Kenya, the suffering and death of so many innocents. The thought of tribalism for many seems so distant, so primitive. We consider ourselves far beyond such uncivilized behavior. Yet, in churches throughout the land we hear of being born again or going to hell. The messages attached to the word of God are inclusion for some and damnation for many others. If only others would be “saved” and learn to believe as I do. I even heard one local TV preacher lament the fact that his father was not saved and even though he was a good man, he was burning in hell. Tribalism, but instead of hacking each other with machetes, we use the word of God. Into Peters world and ours, comes the realization that God shows no favoritism but accepts all from every nation.

Go and Do

Wednesday January 16th, Acts 10: 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. 37 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached— 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. And now God is with you. Go therefore into the world, not even the distant world, but the one in which you live and love and work and bring the good news of Christ through word and deed. In fact, without the deeds, the words are often not heard. Desmond Tutu once said that if an elephant has his foot on the tail of a mouse and you say you are neutral in that situation, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality. To that I would add, that even if you say you are against elephants stepping on mouse tails and walk away, the mouse still will not be appreciative. It is only when you free the mouse that it will hear your words and believe them. Go be a child of God and do the Gospel as well as speaking it.

Never alone

Thursday January 17th Matthew 3: 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" Jesus, the Son of God, being baptized by John who was calling others to repent and be baptized. It may seem strange, but there is something new here. Jesus ushered in a new era, a new baptism. No longer would baptism be just a washing away of the old, but a dedication to the new. Life is changed and new life begins and the community gathers and says you do not have to do this alone.

Righteousness

Friday January 18th, Matthew 3: 15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. For Matthew it is important to show that Jesus fulfills all righteousness. Matthew casts Jesus as the new Moses who brings the new law to the people and frees them once again from all that enslaves them. As the children of God we fulfill all righteousness simple by being a child of God. For what shines through is not ourselves, but God’s righteousness.

Welcome

Saturday January 19th, Matthew 3: 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." At your baptism God also claims you as a child of God. At your baptism, the community claims you as a fellow child of God. Jesus changed John’s baptism from washing for repentance to calling for service. In this service there are no lone rangers, we are all there as the community of believes called to help one another through this life. We welcome you to the Lord’s family; we receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ and a worker with us in the kingdom of God.

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm

On today’s news. From the Jerusalem Post - Iranian boats harass US Navy ships in Strait of Hormuz Pentagon official: Boats threaten US vessels, confrontation narrowly averted; "serious provocation" worst yet; Iran brushes off incident. From the Jerusalem Post. From the New York Times - JERUSALEM — Israeli security officials said Sunday that a rocket with a longer range than usual fired by Palestinian militants from Gaza into the coastal city of Ashkelon on Thursday had been made in Iran. It was the first such rocket to land in Israel, and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel would intensify its response to the firing of such longer-range rockets. From McClatchy press - WASHINGTON — President Bush, who once had grand ambitions to transform the Middle East through democratic reform, begins his first extended presidential visit to the region Tuesday with his sights lowered and his ability to influence events fading fast. From the Israeli prime minister's modest house in Jerusalem to the palace of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, Bush can expect a polite welcome during the nine-day trip. But with the U.S. presidential campaign under way, governments in the region already appear to be looking past Bush to his successor. They're expecting no major breakthroughs.

If I was a suspicious person I might consider that perhaps the news stories were being trumped up a bit and the reason for Bush’s visit was to try to set things up so Israel could attack Iran, which means we would come to Israel’s defense, all in time to swing Novembers elections to a pro-war candidate, which would not be a Democrat. But I am not a suspicious person and after all it would real idiot to dream up the idea of a pre-emptive military strike for political gain.
