Matthew 4:1-11 The Temptation of Jesus

Sometimes you know
Deep down inside you just know
But you have to test
Children do it all the time
Test
They know
But they just want to really know
Who’s in charge
Are things the same
And they test
The people Israel knew
They had their time
For forty years they wandered
And were put to the test
And they knew the story
Each line by heart
To say one line
Said them all
And they lived that time
And answered the question
Who’s in charge?
After forty days Jesus was hungry
And they knew
they had been there too
they knew the hunger
they knew the pain
and they felt each moment
when the temptations came
and the forty years
of their wanderings came back
and they remembered that time
and they remembered their lack
as they whined and groaned
and fell into sin
at each temptation
again and again
and answered the question
who’s in charge?
If you are who you say then tell these rocks
And the question rang
Tell them to be bread so you can eat
The devil sang
And the question came out loud and clear
And Israel knew it
Knew it deep in their hearts
Because they lived it
And they prayed it
Each day of their lives
Shama
The Lord is our God
The Lord is one
But still that question
it needs to be near
and the question rang out
who’s in charge here
and the answer came as did manna from above
that we don’t live on just bread
but we live on each word
that comes from our God
who’s in charge
but that wasn’t enough
and Jesus was taken
to the temple in Jerusalem
and the devil said
it’s time to test God
and the claim that you’re really the son
so jump from this temple
jump down and show
the world
that God’s really true
God said you’d be safe
So prove it. Now Jump
Maybe I’ll stop bugging you too…
And Israel remembered
How they had tested their Lord
And the question rang out loud and clear
And Jesus snapped back
Don’t put God to the test
And the question……
Who’s in charge here
Next Jesus was lead
To the top of the mountain
To see all the kingdoms below
And Israel remembered
Shema Israel
They remembered their own calf of gold
As Moses was taken on high
They knew
They remembered
How miserable they failed in their task
And Moses had seen
What the people had done
And again the question was asked

It’s yours
You can have it
You can be their messiah
Just bow down and worship me now
And Jesus responded
Satan! Go to hell!
For it is written
Worship and serve only God
Remembered Israel
They remembered their prayer
Shama
The Lord is our God
The Lord is one

Opening Litany, Psalm 32

Pastor: Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed I say is the one whose sin the LORD does not count and in whose spirit is no deceit.

Congregation: When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me and my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD "— and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Pastor: Therefore let everyone who is Godly pray while you may be found; for surely when the mighty waters rise, they will not cause harm.

Congregation: You are our hiding place O Lord and you will protect us from trouble and surround our lives with songs of deliverance.

Pastor: I will instruct you and teach you in the way of the Lord, I will counsel you and watch over you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you. Live free, knowing you are a forgiven child of God.

Congregation: When we lose sight of You O Lord many are our woes. But the LORD's unfailing love surrounds all who trusts in the Lord. Therefore we will Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, we will sing and praise the Lord’s name with an upright heart!

Ash Wednesday Matthew 6:1-16

Is my hair straight?
How about this tie
---- does it match
the rest of the image
---- (help me)
I wish to present?
------------ an image
I sometimes make a show
for the world
--------------- so busy making shows
yet
-------- I long for something more
-------- (Lord)
-------- I long to uncork
------------- that stream
-------- of passion
------------- within me
that passion
----- that draws me toward the light
----------- and illumines
---------------- my innermost
---------------------- Yes I dare let go
----------------------------- self
------ (to place)
protected now
by the walls of expectation
built on the unfulfilled dreamings
of what should be.

But there are those times
when
------- for some reason
------------- beyond me
I live in a world filled with people
-------- alone
----- (my trust)
and in those brief glorious moments
I become
----- whole
----- (in)
and cry
----- for no reason
----- seeing no eyes upon me
----- and I Thank You
----- (You)
--------- Lord

Psalm 51

Worship Leader:  Have mercy on us O God, with your unfailing love and great compassion blot out all our transgressions.

Congregation: Wash away all our iniquities and cleanse us from our sin. For we are aware of our transgressions, the thoughts of those things that stand between us and the God who loves us are always on our minds.

Worship Leader:  When it comes right down to it we realize that it is against God, and God only that we have sinned and done that which is shameful in the sight of God.

Congregation: Should the Lord judge us, that judgment would be justified.  I have been full of myself and not God from the beginning, perhaps even before I was born.

Worship Leader:  the Lord desires that truth would be an intimate part of who we are and the basis for teaching us wisdom that would guide our every move.

Congregation: Cleanse us O Lord with your gracious good will, wash us with your grace and we will be clean.  Let us hear once again of your joy and gladness.

Worship Leader:  Hide your face from all our sins O Lord and blot out all our iniquities.

Congregation: Create in us a pure heart, O God and renew a steadfast spirit within us.

Psalm 2

Worship Leader: Why do the nations conspire, and the peoples plot in vain? The movers and shakers of the world work together against the will of the Lord saying, “let us break free and do things our way.”

Congregation: The Lord of Heaven and Earth laughs and shakes his head.  One word and the movers and shakers are filled with fear.

Worship Leader: The Lord will decree who is in charge and the Lord has chosen, saying, “You are my son and today I have chosen you. The nations are yours to the ends of the earth and all from the least to the lowly shall know of your power.

Congregation: Be wise therefore all movers and shakers and all people on the earth. Serve the Lord and heed his ways and remember that joy and happiness belongs to those who take their refuge in the Lord.

Matthew 17:1-9 The Transfiguration

All that talk about crosses
It’s kinda creepy
It just feels good to get out
(led them up)
Go for a little hike
Where I don’t know
But good
And we all strive to stay on top
(three shelters)
Up
Out of the way
Longing for the easy way
Out of the dust
(this is my son)
Dirt
(whom I love)
Streets
(listen to him)
If only we could stay here
Have the people come to us
Visit the place it all came together
(he led them)
A holy place
(down the mountain)
A sign of the kingdom

Psalm 119:1-8

Worship Leader: Blessed is the one who is blameless and walks in the ways of the Lord.

Congregation: Blessed is the one who follows the word of the Lord and seeks the Lord with all their heart, for they do no wrong in following the ways of the Lord.

Worship Leader: You have laid down before us O Lord the way we are to go, and oh that I were strong in following your ways.

Congregation: Were I to live in your ways O Lord, I would never be put to shame.

Worship Leader: I will praise you O Lord as I learn of your ways.

Congregation: and with your help, I will walk in your ways my whole life long.

Matthew 5:21-37 Murder Adultery Divorce

I am just trying to get to worship
Packing the kids and all their things in the car
Rushing out the door at the last moment
And then some jerk
Some stupid jerk
Pulls out in front
Of ME
And goes
So
Slow
So
Slow
So
Slow
I could just kill him
(you have heard it said)
How do you expect me to keep this family together
Teach the children their lessons
(but I tell you)
Provide a good example
With jerks like that on the road
There ought to be a law
(leave your gift)
We need a bit more law and order around here
More laws
More cops
More prisons
To control
Others
(and reconcile)
I just can’t believe the stupid jerk
(and do not)
Has such a hot wife
I mean
(cause)
Hot
I can’t wait to see what little number
(others)
She is wearing today
No wonder I never
Hear
(to sin)
The sermon
