Down, God comes down!!

Monday August 8th, Genesis 28: 10Jacob…came to a certain place and camped for the night since the sun had set. He took one of the stones there, set it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12And he dreamed: A stairway was set on the ground and it reached all the way to the sky; angels of God were going up and going down on it. Unlike the old gospel song, we are not climbing Jacobs’s ladder, every rung higher and higher. Instead, it is the angels of God, the messengers of God who are using the ladder to come down to us. We keep wanting to go up the down staircase rather than welcoming the God who comes down. Down to us. Down to where we are. Down to the live in the midst of our joys. Down to live in the midst of our sorrows. Down to the front lines in Iraq, on both sides of those lines. Down to the cancer ward. Down to the schools and churches and synagogues and mosques and hospitals and board rooms and lunch rooms and homeless shelters. Down, God comes down.
