self-righteous rise of fundamentalism
Monday October 8th, Genesis 2: 23-25 The Man said, "Finally! Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh! Name her Woman for she was made from Man." Therefore a man leaves his father and mother and embraces his wife. They become one flesh. The two of them, the Man and his Wife, were naked, but they felt no shame. Humanity had a little trouble getting that oneness down. For most of human history, instead of the two becoming one, it was the woman becoming mine. And now, even in this nation, some would like to try to put that Jeanie back in the bottle. But God has called us into relationships, loving relationships. Relationships are the best way we humans can show and experience the dynamics of the love of God. Relationships are where we feel the loving touch, sometimes sexual, most often comforting, and in the process we can experience most closely the love of God. The church has taken way too long to accept the fullness of God’s love expressed in interclass relationships, interethnic relationships, interfaith relationships and interracial relationships and most recently homosexual relationships. Until it is our children, whom we love, who are calling us to accept and embrace their loving relationships it is hard for many to accept changes in this world. I applaud those churches who are moving forward on this issue, but I am saddened by how long it is taking and by those who see loving one another as the straw that breaks the camel’s back. And I am saddened by the self-righteous rise of fundamentalism that once again threatens to roll back the call to love one another given as a gift to humanity by the loving God who created us all. Someday, we will get the immensity of God’s love, until then, in spite of our differences, head the call to love one another.
