Friday July
13th, Mark 6: Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7 Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and
gave them authority over evil spirits. 8 These were his
instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no
bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an
extra tunic. In the church, we like to study things. We study “Just war theory” even though Jesus
said to love your enemies, not kill them.
We study human sexuality within the context of faith to see if someone
can be an active homosexual and an active Christian, even though Jesus said
nothing about homosexuality but did say something about divorce. We spend lots of time studying to primarily
try to find the loopholes that will allow us to justify our ideas as God’s
ideas. I think Jesus sent the disciples
out with very little so they would spend less time wondering how to best use
the things they brought and more time just brining the Good News of salvation. Perhaps we could spend less time in study and
more time in doing the gospel and in the process, learn.
