Strange bedfellows!!

Thursday October 23rd, Matthew 22: 15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. "Teacher," they said, "we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Strange bedfellows!! The Herodians were the supporters of the Roman occupation and were in favor of paying the tax, the Pharisees were popular with the people because the resisted paying the tax. Opposites united for a common purpose, to keep up the fight and get rid of the rabble rousing new guy. It is unclear who does the talking, but it also matters little, they are both trying to butter him up for the kill. Jesus is a threat to both their power bases. Their questions remind me of the political discourse where someone is asked a question and gives an unrelated political spin as an answer. Jesus, and the Kingdom offends both sides, just as the church should be willing to offend both sides of the political spectrum in today’s world.
