unclean?
Thursday
August 21st, Matthew 15: 17 "Don't you see that
whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of the
mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' “19 For out of the heart come evil
thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
20 These are what make a man
'unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him 'unclean.' The laws of what
was clean and what was unclean governed all aspects of life. That may seem silly to us now, but we tend to
do the same thing only more subtly. We eat bacon and ham because those
prohibitions were from another era in the Old Testament, but claim the same set
of laws as proof that God condemns homosexuality. Many on the political right claim allegiance
to their Christian faith while supporting congressional budgets and local
policies that will wreak havoc on the least, lost and lonely, which Christ reminds
us is the same as doing it onto him. The
disciples were not long from learning from the outsider, the Canaanite woman,
that what was unclean was their quick willingness to condemn her as unclean.
