Free to Love
Galatians 5:13-14 For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
"A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all." Martin Luther said that almost 500 years ago and it still resonates. It sticks with us because it is such a great explanation of the freedom Christ has given us. By dying on that cross and rising again, Christ freed us from a life of trying to earn a salvation that was beyond our reach. Freed us from the debt of sin. Now the problem is that so many people take that first part of Luther's quote and leave it at that, but what is so important is that with that freedom comes a responsibility, a responsibility to our neighbor. Christ might not need our good works, but our neighbor certainly does.
